Description

Shape Matters: Meeting Complex Posture and Skin Care Needs through Custom Seating

Course Description:

You have been in the practice of prescribing or providing seating and mobility solutions for some time – You find yourself challenged sometimes when faced with the client who appears to have more complex postural/functional and skin integrity needs. Custom Seating can be daunting at times – the fear of “not getting it right”. You may have heard some buzz about scanning technology being used in conjunction with shape capturing. You use or might be wondering about the use of Interface pressure mapping as an adjunct to your assessment/outcome measurement tools. If any of these statements describe you – This course is for you!

Please join us for a day of learning and hands on interaction designed for the Clinician and/or ATP/SMS who is at a more advanced level or who wants to get to a more advanced level in terms of seating assessment and solution creation skills.

We will have a client who presents with more complex seating needs join us for a hands on assessment followed by an analysis and summary of the findings. We will simulate the ideal seating alignment for this client and capture their shape. Scanning technology will be demonstrated and practiced.

Best practices for each step of the process from the hands on assessment to the justification through ordering process will be detailed. Interface pressure mapping as well as custom seating assessment tools will be on site to assist with our hands on learning experience.

Everyone will leave with immediately applicable skills and processes.

Objectives:

  1. Outline a clinical process for prescription of custom seating from assessment through final fitting
  2. Explain the importance of isolating hip ROM from pelvic movement when assessing a client.
  3. Identify 2 clinical reasons why off the shelf seating is sometimes not enough for certain clients who present with more complex skin and postural needs
  4. List the steps involved in setting up the simulator and bags prior to transferring the client for their shape capturing
  5. List the steps involved in capturing a shape using scanning technology
  6. List 2 measurements that can be valuable when using Interface Pressure Mapping as part of the seating assessment for the client with complex seating needs
  7. Identify 3 features of a seating system that will assist with Pressure Redistribution: Postural Management and Microclimatic Management for our client
